We also joined the luncheon which was hosted by Mr. Edward Yau Tang-wah, JP, The Secretary for the Environment, and we shared concepts about how LEDs can be utilised in conjunction with solar energy in the less privileged and remote area of China.
The conference turns out to be very successful and provide a great opportunity for green NGO's to share their experiences and exchange their views. |

Why Australia bans incandescent light bulbs ?
On February 20, 2007, the Australian Federal Government announced the introduction of minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for lighting products. The standard incandescent light bulb and low efficiency halogen lights, will be phased out by 2009, and be replaced by more energy-efficient lighting alternatives such as compact fluorescent lamps, and LEDs.
From Nov 2008, the importation of non-compliant lighting into Australia will be banned, and from Nov 2009 the retail sale of non compliant lighting will be banned.
The Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull reckons the banning of incandescent bulbs would help trim 800,000 tons of emissions from Australia by 2012, and cut household power bills by up to 66%.
In incandescent light bulbs, electricity flows through a filament to create light. Much of the energy, however, is wasted in the form of heat. Fluorescent bulbs use only 20 percent of the energy that an incandescent bulb uses, and LED lights use even less, only 1/10th the energy of incandescent bulbs, even while producing the same amount of light.
Incandescent lights are obsolete. But fluorescent lights contain toxic levels of mercury that pose a serious risk of harm to the environment. The most environmentally friendly and cost-effective lights are LED lights, which use far less electricity than any other type of light.

Do you know the difference between LED and LCD?
LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display which is a thin, flat display screen made up of any number of color or monochrome pixels arrayed in front of a light source or reflector. Note that LCD required an external light source and its liquid crystal materials emit no light of their own, rather they block it. They produce a display by selectively blocking red, green or blue light.
LED stands for Light Emitting Diode which is a semiconductor diode that emits light when an electric current is applied. This effect is a form of electroluminescence.
LED has many diverse applications but mainly fall into these categories:
1) Visual signal application i.e. LED displays used as television displays, electronic billboards, dynamic decorative displays
2) Luminaries i.e. light bulbs, architectural lighting, backlighting for LCD displays
3) Non visual applications i.e. remote controls, movement sensors
